Pride goes before a fall is one maxim which is as old as time itself. But why do we still fall prey to this vice, if this timeless warning has been etched in the very ground we walk on ever since we were born? This perhaps is because it is self serving and excites the senses and ego of the person unfortunate to be caught in its snares.

Pride comes in different forms, like feeling good about what you’ve done or thinking you’re better than everyone else. Having a little pride can make you feel good and confident, but too much pride can make you blind to your mistakes. Let’s take a closer look at why it’s crucial to overcome pride and hear some stories about people who learned this the hard way.

Understanding Pride

Pride is when you believe too much in yourself and maybe not enough in others. It’s okay to be proud of what you’ve done, but when you start thinking you’re better than everyone else, that’s a problem. In old stories, pride often led to big problems for the characters, and the same thing happens in real life.

The Story of Icarus

You might have heard the story of Icarus. His dad made him wings out of feathers and wax. He warned Icarus not to fly too close to the sun because the wax would melt, but Icarus didn’t listen. He got too proud of himself and flew too high. The sun melted the wax, and he fell into the sea.

Lessons from History

Throughout history, many leaders have been ruined by their pride. Emperor Nero from ancient Rome is one example. He was powerful but too proud. His people didn’t like him because he thought he was better than them. Eventually, they rebelled, and he lost everything.

Modern Examples

Even today, pride causes big problems. Take Elizabeth Holmes, who started a company called Theranos. She said her technology could change healthcare, but it couldn’t. She was too proud to admit it, and her company fell apart.

How to Beat Pride

If you want to avoid the problems pride brings, you need to be humble. That means knowing you’re not perfect and being okay with asking for help. It’s important to listen to others and learn from them. That’s how you grow as a person.

Pride can be dangerous if you let it take over. We’ve seen it ruin people in stories and in real life. But by staying humble, we can avoid those problems. Humility helps us see ourselves and others more clearly, and it leads to real growth and success.
